Book Review: Surviving Religion 101 by Michael J. Kruger

Michael J. Kruger’s Surviving Religion 101 is a wise and encouraging guide for Christians facing intellectual and emotional challenges, especially in university. Written as letters to his daughter, it tackles tough questions with clarity and compassion. What struck me most was the reminder that even spiritual giants like Luther and Spurgeon wrestled with doubt—and that doubt, often emotional in nature, must be met with truth, counsel, and faith. A timely read for guarding both heart and mind.

Consider Carefully How You Listen

“How we should listen” is more important than anything else. Especially in this crisis situation when the pandemic continues to spread, what people do will be largely based on what they hear. However, instead of always focusing on the world, perhaps we should reflect more about how we are listening currently. Especially when we hear God’s word every week: Do we hear and forget? Do we merely hear what we want to hear? Or are we obeying God after hearing? This will basically determine the fruits of our whole life.

Trials Point Us To The Paradoxical Christian Life

We must understand what a paradoxical life in Christ means. When we are experiencing trials, the truth that God wants us to understand is as what Paul said, “we are sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; poor, yet making many rich; having nothing, and yet possessing everything <2 Co 6:10>. We have to ask if our Christian faith is like this?

Trials will always come with this path of faith, so that our faith can reach that glorious state to exalt Christ in our lives. God is doing this thing among us now. We must not be depressed, or succumb to fear. Instead, we must give thanks, and anticipate the good work God is doing in our lives.

5 Blessed Way To Use Your Feelings

Even for children of God who have known the truth of God for a long time, one of the biggest difficulty we face is the way we use our feelings. How then, should we use our feelings rightly?

Why Is My Suffering Getting Worse?

Religion, ethics and morality only provide us with ways to relieve suffering on the human level, such as doing good and engaging in spiritual practice. But they cannot point us to eternal hope in our suffering. Only the Bible can help us to clearly understand sufferings and the answers within.

Excuse me? Excuse sins?

Though it is easy to mouth our apologies to others or God after we have sinned, we know deep in our hearts that there is a lot of rationalising taking place, which will leave room for future re-offending. Hence, it is important for us to know the loopholes where we tend to rationalise when it comes to sins.

Have you ever asked yourself: Why are you not feeling joy in your life? Even as a believer and child of God, why am I still unable to be happy? Let us find out the truth behind our joy-blockers and how we can restore that God-given, spirit-filled happiness again.

Unsure or Afraid of God’s will?
