The Life Church and Missions adheres to the ancient statement of faith – The Apostles’ Creed, Nicene Creed, and affirms the Reformed confessions – The Westminster Standards (WCF, WLC, WSC) and the Heidelberg Catechism, as historic Reformed expressions of the Christian faith, whose doctrines fully agree with the Word of God.
The sole basis of our beliefs is the Bible, God’s infallible written Word, the sixty-six books of the Old and New Testaments. We believe that it was uniquely, verbally and fully inspired by the Holy Spirit, and that it was written without error in the original manuscripts. It is the supreme and final authority in all matters on which it speaks.
The Bible
We believe that the Bible, comprising the 66 books of the Old and New Testaments, is the infallible and inerrant written Word of God. The Bible was uniquely and fully inspired by the Holy Spirit. It is the supreme and final authority in all matters on which it speaks, being the ultimate standard for faith and conduct for every believer in Jesus Christ and for His Church.
2 Timothy 3:15-17; 2 Peter 1:19-21
Triune God
We believe in the one true and living God, eternally existing in three persons – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit – who are same in substance, equal in glory, and are co-existent and co-equal, yet are distinct persons with distinct roles and responsibilities.
Matthew 3:16-17, 28:19-20; 2 Corinthians 13:14; Ephesians 4:4-6; 1 Peter 1:2
God the Father
We believe that God the Father almighty, the first Person of the Holy Trinity, is the Creator of heaven and earth. Through the Son and by the power of the Spirit, God the Father created all things out of nothing, freely and for His glory. In His grace and mercy, God the Father sent His one and only Son, Jesus Christ, to redeem mankind.
Genesis 1:1-31; John 1:3; Acts 17:24-28; Colossians 1:16
God the Son – Jesus Christ
We believe that Jesus, the second Person of the Holy Trinity, is fully God and fully man. He is the eternal Word, who became flesh. He was born of a virgin through conception by the Holy Spirit. Jesus is sinless and lived a perfect life of righteousness. We believe that He is the only Saviour of mankind, as He voluntarily died on the cross to atone for the sins of God’s chosen people, thus appeasing God’s righteous wrath over sins and satisfying divine justice. He was buried, but rose bodily on the third day and ascended to heaven, seated the right hand of God the Father. We believe that He will come again in glory – visibly and bodily – to judge the living and the dead, as well as to consummate history and the eternal plan of God.
Isaiah 7:14; Matthew 1:18-25, 25:31-46; John 1:1-3; Acts 4:12; 2 Corinthians 5:21; Colossians 1:15-23; Hebrews 1:1-3, 9:28; 1 John 2:2; 1 John 3:5; Revelation 20:11-15
God the Holy Spirit
We believe that the Holy Spirit, the third person of the Trinity, convicts the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment. He is the Giver of life, who regenerates the elect, and draws them with irresistible grace to saving faith in Jesus Christ. He effectually leads the chosen people of God to repent and to confess Jesus Christ as Lord. He dwells in the hearts of believers, empowers them for Christian witness and service, imparts them with spiritual gifts to build the church, and helps them in their sanctification.
John 3:5, 14:16-17, 26, 16:7-8; Romans 8:2; 1 Corinthians 6:19, 12:3-11; 2 Thessalonians 2:13–14 ; 2 Timothy 1:14
Mankind
We believe that mankind – male and female, is created by God in His image, to glorify God and to enjoy Him forever. Yet, because of the fall and disobedience of Adam, sin entered the world, and death came through sin, and in this way death came to all people, because all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. All people are born with a sinful nature, and sin in their thoughts, words and deeds, resulting in both physical and spiritual death. Being totally depraved, it is beyond human power to genuinely repent and return to God on their own, apart from divine grace.
Genesis 1:26–27; Ps 51:3-5; Romans 3:10–23, 5:12, 18-19, 6:23; Ephesians 2:1-3
Salvation
We believe that salvation is by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone. Salvation is totally dependent on God’s free grace and does not depend on any human effort or merit. To atone for the sins of mankind, Jesus Christ voluntarily became a substitutionary and propitiatory sacrifice to God, so that whoever believes in Him shall be forgiven of their sins, declared righteous and not perish but have eternal life. Those who believe in Jesus are given the right to become children of God, they are reconciled to God, they are also in union with Christ, and the Holy Spirit dwells in them as their Helper and Comforter.
John 1:12, 3:16, 14:26; Acts 4:12, 10:43; Romans 5:1, 8-10, 6:3–8, 10:9; Ephesians 2:8-10; Titus 3:3-7; 1 John 2:2
Church
We believe the church is a single entity, but it can be viewed from two perspectives. From God’s perspective (the invisible), it is the entire number of the elect from all time; and from the human perspective (the visible), it consists of all people throughout the world who truly profess faith in Jesus Christ. We also believe that Jesus Christ is the Head of the church, His body, which consists of all believers united to Him through saving faith. The church is to glorify God through worship and faithful service in fulfilling His will on earth, namely, to make disciples through the preaching of the gospel from the Bible. Every believer is called to be an active and committed member of a visible, local church. God has commanded believers to set aside one day in seven to be kept holy unto Him. From the beginning of the world until the resurrection of Christ, this Sabbath was the seventh day of the week – Saturday; since the resurrection of Christ, it has been changed to the day of resurrection (Sunday), which is the first day of the week – the Lord’s Day, which is to continue as the Christian Sabbath until the end of the world. God also commands believers to regularly meet together for worship, mutual edification, and for participation in church sacraments.
Sacraments
We believe that Christ has left two enduring sacraments for His people – holy baptism and holy communion. Baptism is a sacrament instituted by Christ, in which the washing with water in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit signifies and seals our union with Christ, our sharing in the benefits of the covenant of grace, and our solemn commitment to be the Lord’s. Baptism is to be administered only to those who belong to the visible Church and who profess faith in Christ and obedience to Him. However, the infants of believers who are members of the visible Church can also receive the sign of baptism. Infant baptism, however, is not a guarantee of salvation but signifies the child’s inclusion in the covenant community and God’s promises, requiring personal faith later in life to affirm his/her belief.
Holy communion, or The Lord’s Supper, is a sacrament instituted by Christ, done in remembrance of Him, to proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes, and express our unity with the body of Christ. The Lord’s Supper is to be observed only by those who have believed in Christ for salvation and have been baptized into His death and resurrection. This sacrament commemorates the breaking of Christ’s body and the shedding of His blood on our behalf, and believers are to partake it with faith and self-examination throughout our Christian life as a sign of our ongoing participation in the benefits of His atoning death.
Matthew 26:26-28, 28:18-20; Romans 6:4; Acts 2:38-39, 16:14-15, 32-34; Colossians 2:11-12; 1 Corinthians 7:14, 11:23-32
Consummation and Eternity
We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ will come again personally, visibly, bodily and gloriously, to consummate history and God’s eternal plan of salvation. We believe in the eternal security of all who have repented and are truly saved, that they will go through a life of sanctification, and ultimately have bodily resurrection to everlasting blessedness, and we also believe in the bodily resurrection of unrepentant and unforgiven sinners to eternal, conscious punishment.
