Abounding Grace for Abounding Good Works

Abounding Grace for Abounding Good Works

Audio Player:

When people hear the topic of giving in church, the first thought is often money. Many assume that giving refers mainly to financial contributions or tithes. Yet the teaching in Second Epistle to the Corinthians 9 shows that Christian generosity is far richer and deeper than a simple financial transaction. It flows from God’s grace and produces good works that bring glory to Him.

Giving Cheerfully

The passage highlights two different ways a person may give: reluctantly or cheerfully. Believers are encouraged to give not out of pressure or obligation, but with a willing and joyful heart. As Second Epistle to the Corinthians 9:7 reminds us, God loves a cheerful giver.

This attitude reflects the very character of God. The greatest example of generous giving is found in the gospel itself. As Epistle to the Romans 8:32 declares, God “did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all.” If God has given His very best for our salvation, then believers who understand His grace respond with gratitude and generosity. Cheerful giving grows out of a heart that treasures God more than earthly possessions.

The Principle of Sowing and Reaping

Another key principle in the passage is that whoever sows sparingly will reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will reap generously. This principle, however, should not be misunderstood as a promise of guaranteed financial returns.

Scripture teaches that God supplies our needs, not our greeds (cf. Epistle to the Philippians 4:19). The harvest that comes from generosity is often far greater than material wealth.

The passage describes several fruits of generous giving:

  • The needs of others are met.
  • Believers are enriched so they can continue being generous.
  • God receives praise and thanksgiving.
  • Relationships of prayer, gratitude, and affection grow among God’s people.

Just as a farmer does not see sowing seed as a loss, generous giving is not truly losing something. It is planting seeds that produce a harvest of righteousness and blessing.

God Is the Supplier

Generosity ultimately begins with God. Second Epistle to the Corinthians 9:8 declares that God is able to bless His people abundantly so that they will have everything they need to abound in every good work.

God provides both the seed and the harvest. The resources believers possess—time, abilities, finances, and opportunities—are gifts entrusted by Him. Rather than seeing God as one who takes, Scripture reveals Him as the One who gives.

In contrast, the world often teaches that prosperity comes from holding tightly to what one has. The gospel points to a different reality: God supplies what His people need so that they may participate in His work with open hands and generous hearts.

For the Glory of God

The ultimate purpose of generosity is not personal recognition but the glory of God. When believers give faithfully, several things happen: people’s needs are met, gratitude rises in their hearts, and praise is directed toward God.

This is why the chapter ends with a joyful declaration: “Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift!” (Second Epistle to the Corinthians 9:15).

Christian generosity is therefore not merely about money. It is a response to grace, a participation in God’s work, and a means by which the world witnesses the goodness of God. When grace abounds in the hearts of believers, good works will abound as well—and all the glory will belong to God.
