Beware Of Misrepresentation By The Media

Beware Of Misrepresentation By The Media

Audio Player:

As we know, we have a very news savvy generation. People are sifting news from all over the internet and various sources of newsfeed. And because of that demand, I observe that it has given rise to at least two phenomena in the news world.

First, the loss of objective reporting.

I notice that news media nowadays tend to get into the nitty gritty of reporting, capturing the audience with side issues, which in fact distract them from what is critically conclusive.

Since the COVID experience which our church had, we have medias constantly coming to us with pressing requests for interviews. They asked about how we felt, how things have been with the previous Covid patients, whether our church was doing well and so on. I mean we shared a lot about how God, how prayers and how the love among brethren have brought us through, in fact that forms 90% of our replies, which was our real experience.

But it wasn’t reported.

Instead what was reported were the peripherals. And for some medias, we notice what sounds warm and sensational were usually reported instead, which sometimes was not fully conclusive about what we’re representing. So that brings us to conclude that there are selective crowds which medias are reaching out to.

And when more of such medias are rising up to gain credibility in the internet, imagine what will form the culture of reporting? Will they be reporting more about the subjective opinions, or changing feelings of people, or what is really conclusive?

Now, it’s important for news media to know that when we train our listeners to listen to what is opiniated, we will very quickly lose a generation who learns to listen intently and what is critically and objectively conclusive. Although we as curious human beings would like to know about the process of things, but we must be trained to listen to, or to find out what is factual and conclusive. Sometimes, too much sensation just plays up issues needlessly.

And the next phenomena I realized with this generation of medias is that it is prone to misrepresentation.
Pardon me for saying that, but many a times, they err by making something conclusive which evidently is not.

Now, I don’t know if you heard about it. Recently, there was a post in the internet that gains quite a lot of traction. It was a post about what a lady Pastor shared about the fight against sexual temptation. I saw the posting, it was a very clear message on holiness and purity. Yet, the post ended up with netizens, both believers and non-believers simply slammed her. Why? Simply because one of her slides made a suggestion about how sisters can help brothers by not dressing in a revealing and provocation way. It’s just a plain and harmless suggestion, but it has caused an uproar, especially with young and liberal netizens. And the pastor, having seen the outcry has since apologized. But what I saw is that the whole message was thrown out just because of that one suggestion, and we wonder why. Why the outcry? Why such a triggered reaction? But shortly after that, we saw more terrible reactions from some of the medias . One of which I will share here, reported by mustsharenews. Now, take a good look at what is being represented here. First, look at the suggestion brought about by this lady who is reading the bible wearing a pajamas. Look at what the headings implies: “Singapore Pastor Asks Girls To Dress Modestly To Prevent Lust”. Now, the whole picture is suggestive, isn’t it?

Now, my brethren, this is call fake news. It is fake because of the misrepresentation.

Think about it. How would people think when they saw such headings? Most won’t even bother about reading the content of what the pastor said, but will simply be brought in by the blanket statement of the headings. The headings given here is simply to advocate the liberals’ agendas and leanings, which is seeking to gain ground in this Era. Just as the media is pleasing the triggered netizens, the society on the whole is being subtly pushed towards a kind of activism which lean towards the left.

I can almost hear a generation of people saying: “Away with the conservatives, away with the bible. It’s about human rights, it’s about woman rights, it’s about minority rights”. And before you know it, you will have a generation of churchgoers who claim they are in the faith, yet they reject anything that challenges their liberal mindset. They are people with unsound mind, who cares nothing other than their feelings. They don’t read articles or commentaries critically and objectively, but only accede to those who is in line with their inclinations.

Now, first of all, my brethren, the Bible is never against the rights of women or minorities. In fact, it is the very book that elevates human dignity to the highest, regardless of race and sex. It is the only book that tells us that we’re created in the image of God, and who are given defined roles to live out to our very best potential. That is exactly the reason why Bible believing people are contributing the most to the well-being of mankind. And that is the reason why the Bible has been the best-selling book every year for the past 50 years.

Yes, there are books that help you get rich, there are books that helps you gain fast success, but there is never a book that deals with your total and eternal well-being, except for the Bible.

The sales speak for itself.

The way people are being transformed by the words of the Bible speaks for itself.

But my brethren, in our post-modern Era today, where the work of the Anti-Christ is starting to gain ground, it is using the liberal media to spread liberal messages, and to start liberal movements. It is everywhere, and especially all over the internet today. And foolish people are being brought over by their ideologies and sentiments. And I like you my brethren, to be wise, and be of sound mind.

Now, I am going to end with one last note for church leaders and believers who pledges allegiance to the truth. In the words of the Apostle Paul,

<2 Ti 4:4-5>: “They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths. But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry”.

Now, the Apostle is simply saying: Be bold for the truth. Fight for it. Now, if you are wondering how to fight for the truths when we are living in a world of opinions, where many views are blurry. They don’t seem to be wrong, yet they don’t seem to be right either. Now, I will end with what Martin Luther says about fighting for the truth.

Martin Luther said: “If I profess with the loudest voice and clearest exposition every portion of the truth of God except that little point which the world and the devil are at that moment attacking, I am not confessing Christ, however boldly I may be professing Him. Where the battle rages, there the loyalty of the soldier is proved.”

Ask yourselves my brethren, where does the battle rage? Fight for the truth, right on that battle line. And you will see the truth prevails, and the wrong inclination of a generation turns.
